Renewable Energy Day Freiburg 2024
Capturing The Incredible Moments
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Patrick Graichen
Former State Secretary on Energy and Climate Action
How (not) to solve the climate crisis: Insights from political experience
What are the key technologies and strategies to reach the national, European and international climate targets? Which policy instruments are suggested by experts and scientists to reach them? And what happens when they enter the political process? In his keynote Patrick Graichen will cover these questions, drawing on his expertise both as Executive Director at a leading energy and climate think tank and as State Secretary in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
Patrick Graichen has been a driving force in shaping climate and energy policies in Germany, Europe, and internationally. From 2021-2023, he was energy state secretary in the German federal ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. In the decade before, he played key roles at Agora Energiewende, focusing on power market design, renewable energy expansion, coal consensus, and industrial energy policies. Patrick’s journey began with academic studies in political science and economics, culminating in a doctoral thesis on Energy Policies of Municipalities.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Hans-Martin Henning
Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg
Key features of the future energy system
The path to a climate-neutral energy supply is characterized by a few key features that emerge robustly from many studies and analyses. One of these key features is a significant increase in global electricity demand – electricity based on renewable energies will increasingly become the most important primary energy. The lecture will present this aspect and other key features and discuss implications and challenges.
Hans-Martin Henning is director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, Germany, and a Professor of “Solar Energy Systems” at the University of Freiburg. He serves as the Chairman of the Expert Council on Climate Issues for the German Government, and is member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). With a solid academic background, including a Ph.D. in physics and a wealth of experience at Fraunhofer ISE, he has been instrumental in pioneering research in building energy technology and energy system analysis.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Christian Paul
badenovaWÄRMEPLUS
Freiburg’s path to decarbonization-transformation and expansion of district heating supply from the utilities’ point of view
With the “Heat Master Plan Freiburg” as one of the first municipal heat plans, the city of Freiburg is consolidating its goal of completely decarbonizing the city. A key element of this is the CO2-free district heating supply, especially in densely built-up areas. As a district heating network operator, badenovaWÄRMEPLUS has absorbed this goal and reports on the current status, challenges and approaches in this presentation.
Christian Paul is a dedicated professional with over a decade of experience in the energy sector. Currently, he serves as a Geschäftsentwickler Wärme at badenovaWÄRMEPLUS in Freiburg. In this role, he contributes his expertise to drive business development initiatives in the field of thermal energy.
Christian held the role of Projektentwickler Großprojekte (project developer) at badenovaWÄRMEPLUS. He played a key role in developing major projects within the organization such as the Wärmeverbund Freiburg-Süd – one of the largest forth generation heat network in realization in Germany. He led the technical sales department and contributed to the growth and success of the company.
