The ZEE acts as a central scientific facility; it brings together scientific institutions within the university that engage in renewable energy problems in research and education, as well as forming cooperation agreements with institutions from outside the university in the areas of research, education, and advanced training. The ZEE is interdisciplinary and cross-faculty and currently involves seven of the University of Freiburg’s 11 faculties.
The ZEE is responsible for fundamental, practice-oriented research, as well as industry-related research and development. Preparation for high calibre Master and PhD programmes is currently in progress.

The Forest Research Institute in Freiburg is a research facility of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg with excellent expertise in the field of applied wood-energy research, amongst others.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems is a global leader in applied solar research and plays an important role in the area of solar energy systems.
Offenburg University of Applied Sciences
The Offenburg University of Applied Sciences is well known in both teaching and applied research and development in the engineering disciplines and is an important partner, in particular with its Institute for Sustainable Energy Systems (INES) with regard to renewable energies/energy technology.

The renowned Freiburg “Öko-Institut e.V. – Institute for Applied Ecology” will be economically and politically involved in both the climate protection and energy areas of the Centre.
